- On 19 February 1951 Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake laid the foundation stone for the school on a 25 acres (10 ha) site, near the Mirigama railway station.
- Rev. Weweldeniye Medhalankara Thero took the initiative to establish this school and provide higher education for the students in the area.
